Generative Grammar Examples
This section contains analysis projects accomplished
with the generative context free grammar tools
included in
Helsinki Music Tools.
Overview
The students attending a course titled
Musical Applications of Computers
have prepared generative grammars based on a small corpus of
music of their own choice.
The students have typically selected three or more
short compositions
and prepared an analysis in the form of a context-free grammar.
They have stored the grammars in a text file
on the computers at the Laboratory
and used programs provided by Helsinki Music Tools
to generate new pieces.
The analysis system is simple
and mainly used for giving the students
an idea on how generative grammars work
and how detailed the musical information given to the computer
must be to accomplish even simple results.
In some cases however,
either because of suitable musical material
or a clever analysis - or both,
context-free grammars have proved to be
usable for generating
music with close stylistic resamblance to the original material.
We have collected some of the analysis projects here as HTML documents.
