Ländlers by Giuliani
Conclusion
This analysis of The Four Ländlers of Opus 80 by Giuliani was based on using the generative context-free grammar developed by Noam Chomsky. The production of new Ländlers was made with grammar tools included in Helsinki Music Tools. A conclusion at least in this case
is that a contextfree grammar cannot be used to generate new pieces in satisfactory manner in a given style. This can depend on the grammar according to which the generation was made. The nonterminals of the grammar were degrees of the chords. Therefore as one chord lasted for one bar, the bits of melodies became quite long. This caused that the junctions of the melodies became too clear. The melody fragment in each bar can be easily associated and linked together with the Ländler it is from. This disadvantage could be diminished by choosing a larger corpus. However, the generative grammar tools included in Helsinki Music Tools might be useful in composing music.
