Spectutils Home Page

Spectutils is a software package for creating spectrogram plots of audio signals. Spectutils contains a set of subroutines for Gnu Octave and a set of Unix/Linux utility programs for sound file preprocessing.

For an introduction to Spectutils, see the DAFx-08 conference paper: http://www.acoustics.hut.fi/dafx08/papers/dafx08_49.pdf. Also, an online tutorial is available here.

2016-12-21: New major version: Spectutils 3.0.0.

Spectutils 3.0 requires Octave version 4. The current pre-release version is tested with Octave 4.2 and Gnuplot 5.0.5 with the Qt graphics backend. These correct some major problems encountered with previous Octave and Gnuplot versions. Thus, earlier versions of Octave 4 and Gnuplot 5 should be avoided, at least in MacOS/Homebrew. Octave requires the audioread function.

See here for more detailed installing instructions for Mac/Homebrew.

In Mac OS, Spectutils 3.0.0 installs within Octave with "pkg install spectutils-3.0.0.tgz" and "pkg load spectutils". (Change 3.0.0 to the most recent release listed below.)

2010-12-26: New major version: Spectutils 2.0.0.

Spectutils 2.0 requires Octave 3.0.0 and and Gnuplot 4.2.0 or above. On Mac OS X, either AquaTerm or X11 is required. Pre/built binaries of Octave are available for both Mac OS X and Windows at http://octave.sourceforge.net.

Spectutils 1.0 was tested under Fedora Linux, MacOS X 10.4.11/10.5.2 and Windows XP. Spectutils 0.8 and older versions were written for Octave 2.1 (or 2.0) and do not run on Octave 2.9 or newer.

The downloadable package is stored as a bzip2 compressed tar archive file and as an uncompressed tar file.
